As photographers, we hear it all the time.
We don’t like having our picture taken. We looks horrible in photographs. Can you photoshop me?
First, the answer to that last one, nope! We love the beautiful you just the way you are.
Second, being in front of the lens can be a pretty intimidating place to be! Why do you think I hang out behind it?
Kidding! But don’t worry. Today we are talking about 5 ways to make your portraits amazing!!
1.Practice makes perfect – You know those people you are comparing yourself to? Usually it’s a model or an actress or actor. Someone really photogenic that always seems to look perfect in their pictures. They practice!! Modeling to look great in front of professional cameras for your job, that takes time and dedication.
Lucky for you, we have a little secret to share…you don’t have to be a model to look great in your portraits! You also don’t need to practice for hours to get your perfect model face. We use the first chunk of any photography time teaching you all about how to work it in front of the camera.
2.Emotion Looks Amazing! – The number one reason people hate their pictures is because they don’t know what to do. What should my face look like? Where should I put my arms? Maybe I shouldn’t move because I might do it wrong!? You literally can’t do it wrong! Do you know why? Because we aren’t selling shampoo! We are documenting your love story and I hate to be the one to tell you this, but it stars you!! Don’t worry about getting it wrong and instead be yourself. Share your emotion with us all!
3. Avoid the Awkward – There are a few very easy things to avoid on portrait days. The most common one is outfits that bother us. I hate putting on the dress I’ve never worn and wearing it out only to find one strap falls all day, or that new pair of shoes pinches my little toe, or those spanks…they don’t stay put!! The last thing you want to be worried about is something malfunctioning.
Test drive your look so you can avoid that awkward feeling of omg does my face show that I am in so much pain….have I fixed it so I don’t have a muffin top…I hope my boobs are in the right place.
Yes, yes your face shows those thoughts…so let’s leave them at home.
4.We are not Aunt Irma – Speaking of things your left at home. You have to keep in mind that we are not Aunt Irma.
This experience is not going to be, look here smile. Smile. Smile. Oh shoot! My thumb was in the way. Ok look here. Smile. Smile. Smile. Oh shoot! I had the camera on video.
We know our equipment. We know how to make you feel at ease. So please!! Don’t hold past experiences against us. We know Aunt Irma does her best, but this is definitely not that.
5.Reality Check – Cam you feel the love tonight? The love you have for yourself? We all have insecurities about our looks, our bodies, our personality. It’s something that collectively locks us up and throws away the key.
While there might be something you don’t like about yourself, don’t let that hold you back. Smile bigger not smaller, laugh fully! Your joy is GORGEOUS!!! And that can chase away anything that you might not like, because friend, we are all about ignoring that part and LOVING ourselves in spite of our flaws. Because this is the reality check, we are BEAUTIFUL!!! And we welcome you to the French Swan Tribe!!
